Book Description
The relationship between energy and security has been receiving increasing attention over the last few years. Energy literally drives the global economy. Societies rely on it for everything from advanced medical equipment to heating, cooling, and irrigation. Whether it derives from advanced nuclear reactors in developed nations or simple wood stoves in the developing world, energy is recognized as vital to human welfare. It influences our economic, political, and social policies. Possessing or not possessing sufficient energy determines a state's political and economic power. Competition for energy has been, is, and will be a source of conflict. The choices nation-states make when it comes to energy will have a profound bearing on a wide range of security concerns, from nuclear proliferation to climate change.

The Water-Energy-Food Nexus

The Water-Energy-Food Nexus PDF Author: Aiko Endo
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 981107383X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337
Book Description
This book highlights the water-energy-food nexus as one of the most important and fundamental global environmental issues facing the world. Climate and social changes are putting increased pressure on water, energy and food resources. As water is the central aspect within this cluster, the book focuses on the inherent tradeoffs in water resources between producing/consuming energy and food. In addition, it discusses an inter- and trans-disciplinary approach to understanding the complexity of the water-energy-food nexus system, and creating policy options to reduce the tradeoffs among resources. The content integrates a variety of academic disciplines, including not only the natural sciences (e.g. hydrology, coastal oceanography, costal aquatic bioscience, fisheries, environmental earth science etc.) but also the humanities and social sciences (e.g. marine policy, environmental energy policy, resource governance, policy process theory etc.). The book can be used as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate-level sustainability science courses. Further, its practical content and trans-disciplinary approach to addressing nexus issues with stakeholders offers vital information for practitioners and administrators alike.

Grasping the Water, Energy, and Food Security Nexus in the Local Context

Grasping the Water, Energy, and Food Security Nexus in the Local Context PDF Author: Aries Purwanto
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000542378
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 174
Book Description
The existence of water, energy, and food (WEF) is critical for people to fulfil their basic needs, to achieve welfare, and to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The WEF security topic is becoming widely discussed in developing and developed countries. Major components of WEF security i.e. availability, accessibility, and quality should be achieved integratedly to avoid unexpected impacts. The interconnectedness among endogenous and exogenous variables such as environmental, socio-economic, and political factors makes this issue immensely complex. The nexus approach attempts to integrate management and governance across sectors and scales to improve WEF security. This study aims to grasp WEF security in a local context and evaluate the implications of planned local interventions by developing a conceptual and quantitative analysis with local stakeholders. Karawang Regency in Indonesia is chosen as the case study. Several strategies for WEF-related sectors are formulated using location quotient (LQ) and competitive position (CP) methods. In addition, qualitative and quantitative system dynamics models are established by involving related stakeholders through group model building. Finally, a nexus-based framework for WEF security is developed to assist local policymakers in doing the evaluation and planning of WEF resources in the region.

The Water, Energy, and Food Security Nexus in the Arab Region

The Water, Energy, and Food Security Nexus in the Arab Region PDF Author: Kamel Amer
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319484087
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
This book investigates the need for a more open and interdisciplinary dialogue on the nexus of food, water and energy security in the Arab region. It argues that achieving sustainable economic development is irretrievably tied to the security of the water–energy–food nexus, which is in turn essential for bringing about sustained peace. Further, it discusses various approaches to achieving these lofty objectives, and offers the following take-away messages: The Arab region is currently under considerable water stress, and the situation will continue to get worse with a number of global changes – most notably those related to climate and regional water distribution. Viable solutions are available in the Arab region and can be implemented through innovative policies, judicious use of new technologies, and stimulating public opinion. Integration across water, energy, and food sectors is obviously needed but achieving it in practice is extremely challenging. There are some gaps in the scientific understanding but at the same time there is a wealth of data and synthesized information that can guide decision-making.

Book Description
This open access book undertakes a comprehensive analysis of “Water-Energy-Food Nexus”, with a sub-regional focus on East and Southeast Asia. The sub-region is responsible for significant consumption of global water resources and food production. With explosive population growth and rising of living standards, increasing demands are placed upon land and water resources in order to meet the future demands for food and energy. Increasing competition over finite resources across the various sectors and trans-boundaries is intensified without long-term strategy to achieve water, energy, and food security at a regional scale. This book will introduces complex links between water, energy, and food security and explores socioeconomic implication of the nexus approach with a special focus on the cross-cutting issues (e.g. climate change, gender, urbanization, impacts on environment and economy, and transboundary). By presenting the most recent research and science-based evidences, this book provides new insight into nexus solutions. This book opens with introduction and sub-regional overview, offering rationale of the regional approach to solve nexus equations. The first section of the book provides “Regional Overview” of present status of water, energy, and food resources, to share basic facts and figures. The second section focuses on “Sub-regional Issues” and analyses water–energy–food relationships based on different case studies. The section also investigates the socioeconomic and environmental challenges of the sub-region. The third section studies all the major “Cross-Cutting Themes” as the key drivers of policy, actions, and strategies in the sub-region and some innovative approaches and advanced nexus solutions. The last section, “Integrated Narrative”, discusses sub-regional efforts to achieve long-term security. A final chapter of the book explores the some future scenarios and opens a new question to best deal with future challenges using the nexus approach.

Book Description
It is hard to overstate the importance of energy. Energy literally drives the global economy. Societies rely on it for everything from advanced medical equipment to heating, cooling, and irrigation. Whether it derives from advanced nuclear reactors in developed nations or simple woodstoves in the developing world, energy is recognized as vital to human welfare. It influences our economic, political, and social policies. Possessing or not possessing sufficient energy is a key determinant of a state's political and economic power. Competition for energy has been, is, and will be a source of conflict. And the choices we make when it comes to energy will have a profound bearing on a wide range of security concerns, from nuclear proliferation to climate change. The joint Triangle Institute for Security Studies (TISS)/North Carolina State University (NCSU)/Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) conference on the “Energy and Security Nexus,” which was held on March 3-4, 2011, addressed many of these issues. To place the remarks made at this conference within a clearer context, a few terms and concepts need to be discussed. To provide a further framework for the reader, these definitions will be followed by a brief threat assessment, a cost-benefit analysis of different energy technologies seen from a security perspective, and an overview of the chief findings of the conference.
