Now that this book is being published as part of Hartinus Nljho££' s 'Studies in Industrial Organization'. I should like to point out two fac tors which strongly influenced the study. There would have been no project on this scale if the Peace Research coamittee of the Free University, Amsterdam, had not coamissioned a major empirical investigation into Western Europe'an defence industries and pro vided the funds and facUities needed to carry it out. I am grateful for this, for the committee's confidence and its patience, and for the unfail ing support of the secretaries at the Department of International Relations. The study was also submitted and approved as a doctoral dissertation at the Free University. I am deeply endebted to my supervisors, H.W. de Jong (University of Amsterdam). A.J. Vermaat (Free University), and G. Junne (University of Amsterdam). who gave me all the guidance and the encourage ment I needed. to H. Coppens and G. Faber. who were a constant source of advice and support. and to N. Brown (Birmingham University), F. Barnaby. and Th. van den Hoogen (Groningen University). who offered their comments on several occasions.

U.S. Navy Patrol Vessels

U.S. Navy Patrol Vessels PDF Author: Ken W. Sayers
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 147667650X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 558
Book Description
During the past century, U.S. Navy patrol vessels have operated everywhere larger warships have--as well as in places where the big boats could not operate. These bantam warriors have performed in a variety of roles, from antisubmarine warfare to convoy escort and offensive operations against enemy forces afloat and ashore. Patrol vessels battled German units in the Mediterranean, fought insurgents along rivers and canals in China and Vietnam and protected U.S. ships and facilities in the Persian Gulf. Covering more than 1000 of the Navy's small combatants, this comprehensive survey provides all-time rosters, histories, specifications and illustrations of patrol vessels from before World War I to the present. World War II PT boats and submarine chasers and Vietnam War swift boats are covered, along with less well known ships such as Eagle boats, patrol yachts, hydrofoil gunboats and control escorts. A detailed accounting of patrol vessel exports, transfers and shipbuilders is included.

Operation Sealords: A Front In A Frontless War, An Analysis Of The Brown-Water Navy In Vietnam

Operation Sealords: A Front In A Frontless War, An Analysis Of The Brown-Water Navy In Vietnam PDF Author: LCDR William C. McQuilkin USN
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1786250128
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 83
Book Description
This study examines Operation SEALORDS, the capstone campaign conducted by the brown-water Navy in Vietnam. Specifically, this paper addresses the primary question: Was the SEALORDS campaign successful, and if so, what lessons can be learned from SEALORDS and how might the Navy employ brown-water forces in the future? This thesis breaks down the SEALORDS campaign into three areas of study. First, the study examines the barrier interdiction portion of the campaign designed to stem the flow of enemy infiltration of men and material from Cambodia into the Mekong Delta. Second, this study analyzes the Denial of Sanctuary Operations and Pacification portion of the SEALORDS operations. Last, the Accelerated Turnover to the Vietnamese Program (ACTOV) is examined to determine its effectiveness. The findings of this study suggest that by concentrating naval forces athwart the major infiltration routes along the Cambodian border, SEALORDS effectively cut enemy lines of communication into South Vietnam and severely restricted enemy attempts at infiltration. Additionally, the findings suggest that SEALORDS contributed significantly to pacification efforts in the southern part of III Corps and all of the IV Corps Tactical Zone. Finally, the ACTOV Program is evaluated as successful and put the Navy out ahead of the other services with respect to Vietnamization of the war effort.

China's Maritime Gray Zone Operations

China's Maritime Gray Zone Operations PDF Author: Andrew S. Erickson
Publisher: Naval Institute Press
ISBN: 159114695X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
China’s maritime “gray zone” operations represent a new challenge for the U.S. Navy and the sea services of our allies, partners, and friends in maritime East Asia. There, Beijing is waging what some Chinese sources term a “war without gunsmoke.” Already winning in important areas, China could gain far more if left unchecked. One of China’s greatest advantages thus far has been foreign difficulty in understanding the situation, let alone determining an effective response. With contributions from some of the world’s leading subject matter experts, this volume aims to close that gap by explaining the forces and doctrines driving China’s paranaval expansion, operating in the “gray zone” between war and peace. The book covers China’s major maritime forces beyond core gray-hulled Navy units, with particular focus on China’s second and third sea forces: the “white-hulled” Coast Guard and “blue-hulled” Maritime Militia. Increasingly, these paranaval forces, and the “gray zone” in which they typically operate, are on the frontlines of China’s seaward expansion.

Brown Water, Black Berets

Brown Water, Black Berets PDF Author: Thomas J Cutler
Publisher: Naval Institute Press
ISBN: 1612511848
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 446
Book Description
The men of the U.S. Navy's brown-water force played a vital but often overlooked role in the Vietnam War. Known for their black berets and limitless courage, they maneuvered their aging, makeshift craft along shallow coastal waters and twisting inland waterways to search out the enemy. In this moving tribute to their contributions and sacrifices, Tom Cutler records their dramatic story as only a participant could. His own Vietnam experience enables him to add a striking human dimension to the account. The terror of firefights along the jungle-lined rivers, the rigors of camp life, and the sudden perils of guerrilla warfare are conveyed with authenticity. At the same time, the author's training as a historian allows him to objectively describe the scope of the navy's operations and evaluate their effectiveness. Winner of the Navy League's Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement in 1988 when the book was first published, Cutler is credited with having written the definitive history of the brown-water sailors, an effort that has helped readers better understand the nature of U.S. involvement in the war.
