Book Description
Excerpt from A Grammar of Oscan and Umbrian: With a Collection of Inscriptions and a Glossary The following work is an attempt to furnish in a single volume of moderate compass what is most essential for the study of the Oscan and Umbrian dialects. In spite of the meagreness of the material, as compared with languages like Greek and Latin, and in spite of the many questions of detail which are still unsolved, the main features of these two dialects are well understood. And such is their relation to Latin that some acquaintance with them is important, not to the Indo-Europeanist alone, but to the student of the Latin language, and, in a less degree, to the student of the history and antiquities of Italy. In order that a knowledge of the dialects should become more general, it is not enough that we have now such excellent works as Conway's Italic Dialects, with its full presentation of the existing material, and von Planta's exhaustive Grammatik der Oskisch-Umbrisehen Dialekte. The fullness of v. Planta's treatment, the conscientious weighing of possibilities, and the liberal citation of authorities, all add to its value as a work of reference, but the resulting bulk of 1372 pages is likely to deter one who can devote only a moderate amount of time to the subject. That there is need of a briefer grammar has long been the author's conviction, which has only been strengthened by inquiries and suggestions from others in this country and abroad. In order to secure the desired brevity, it has been necessary to eliminate almost wholly any detailed discussion of disputed points, as well as special references for the views adopted or rejected. Any one for whom the general bibliography given below is not sufficient may be referred to v. Planta. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Even after a century, Buck's Grammar of Oscan and Umbrian is still regarded as the authoritative English treatment of these languages, which were spoken on the Italian peninsula during the Roman Republic (509 B.C. through 31 B.C.). Buck's introduction gives general information on orthography and lists key similarities and differences between these two languages, with comparisons with Latin. The grammar features an extensive 80-page section on phonology, followed by an equally detailed 100 pages on grammatical inflection and syntax. A collection of the most important inscriptions in Oscan and Umbrian follows, with a separate glossary for each language. Buck's work also features photographs and illustrations of important inscriptions, as well as a map. This reprint of the 1904 edition is an indispensable resource for the study of the Italic dialects of pre-Roman Italy.

Studies in Ancient Greek Dialects

Studies in Ancient Greek Dialects PDF Author: Georgios Giannakis
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110532131
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 616
Book Description
A new collective volume with over twenty important studies on less well-studied dialects of ancient Greek, particularly of the northern regions. The book covers geographically a broad area of the classical Greek world ranging from Central Greece to the overseas Greek colonies of Thrace and the Black Sea. Particular emphasis is placed on the epichoric varieties of areas on the northern fringe of the classical Greek world, including Thessaly, Epirus and Macedonia. Recent advances in research are taken into consideration in providing state-of-the art accounts of these understudied dialects, but also of more well-known dialects like Lesbian. In addition, other papers address special intriguing topics in these, but also in other dialects, such as Thessalian, Lesbian and Ionic, or focus on important multi-dialectal corpora such as the oracular tablets from Dodona. Finally, a number of studies examine broader topics like the supraregional Doric koinai or the concept of dialect continuum, or even explore the possibility of an ancient Balkansprachbund, which included Greek too. This new reference work covers a gap in current research and will be indispensable for people interested in Greek dialectology and ancient Greek in general.
